    Episodes

    11 Adrift in Subspace

They finish the race 3rd in sequence, 4th in time, 1st in the privateer division. Aisha and Jim show off in Fred's costumes.

12 Mortal Combat with the El Dorado

Harry McDoogal is only 18. Gene's father was killed 6 years ago. Comcube invites them to duel in asteroid belt. XGP originally property of Kay Pirates. Ambush, missile attacks, actually two _El Dorado_. Gene boards Harry's ED, while Harry tries to hack OLS; Gilliam shuts down in defense.

13 Advance Guard from an Alien World

    Promo:

Intro: (Humanity has encountered six XT races. It quickly achieved peaceful relations with the NAIONS and CORBANITES, still experiences friction with SILGRIANS, LORGICKS and SIL, and achieved trade with the KTARO-KTARO only after multiple wars.)

They've re-established STARWIND & HAWKING ENTERPRISES on Heiphon, but are having trouble finding a suitable job for the _OLS_; plus Gene is picky and lackadaisical. AKK mentions a 500-wong bounty for a creature in the sewers; when the others pass it up, she takes it.

Fred Lowe calls with a job: some missing cargo recently brought in by a Silgrian; it pays a 700-W retainer plus 2000-W for a solution. JH and M go. The Silgrian captain (a very tall, blue-skinned creature with birdlike movements and a very flexible neck) describes a newly-discovered carnivorous insect and a cactus-like plant. He can't go to the police, because he didn't apply for import clearance; though he can't remember why he took such a risk. Outside, JH and M notice the storm drains at the perimeter of the spaceport.

At S&HE, TS arrives to chat. GS gets a call from an ice cream vendor who's upset that an adjoining stand is doing better business, even with an inferior product; GS turns it done. He calls CLAIRE (the race clerk from #10) to collect on that date. They buy ice cream from a very popular stand; but it's not very good. There's a cactus sitting next to the vendor.

In the sewers, AKK finds a giant web, and a giant insect attacks.

JH has seen the connection and phones GS, urging him to locate AKK before she kills the bug (which would preclude the 2000-W reward). There's a sudden high-pitched noise on the promenade, and the bug pops out from a storm drain, AKK riding it. JH and M arrive. The cactus, calling itself "the Great One" and a "higher lifeform" (it's been experimenting with controlling humans), coerces JH into carrying it away. M is unaffected by the "strange high frequency waves" and stomps it to bits.

Later, TS returns to S&HE, and mentions a job at a carnival. She's very upset when the others rudely toss her out the door.

    15 t-13-mar-2000 The Seven Emerge

    Promo:

Intro: Under the direct command of Hazanko, leader of the Hundred-Eight Stars, are the ---- a feared group of assassins. TOBIGIRO, a master of disguise and the tools of battle. HAMNIO, a prodigy of space combat with the use of cats. IRIGA, a werewolf with a miraculous lifeforce. JUKAI; his abilities are shrouded in mystery. HITORIGA, a man advanced in the martial arts much like the leader of the Unten Seven. HUMSHI, a beauty who captivates men purely by her good looks. SHIMI, a warrior whose skill is such that there is no-one in the Pirate Guild who has never heard of him. If someone were unfortunate enough to make an enemy of the Unten Seven and is forced to fight against them, I would say only this: farewell, friend.

City space station. Unten Seven assembled before Hazanko. They're all anxious. One is missing; Shimi has been sent, Hazanko says. Why are we needed? Merely an outlaw. H: he is strong, but his power nothing to yours, but sense a powerful keyline leading toward him, if unchecked he could cast a dark shadow upon them. Entrust them:

JH Still way in red. GW. AKK playing handheld game. "Taking it out on me won't do any good either. Why don't you just talk to yourself?" TS stands. M makes coffee. Brings it to GS. Noise outside. "Nothing personal, but I'm here to kill you." SHIMI. Challenges him to duel. Will wait on Monkoku hill noon tomorrow, bring any weapon you can carry, or I'll have to hurt friends. Ticked off, why not finish here. Pulls gun -- and S gets shotgun under GS chin. Will make name for self. "I'm not like those other careless punks."

GS playing game. JS: don't you think you should get ready? How? Don't worry yourself about it, you know justice will always prevail. Concerned JH. GS out for drink. M optimistic.

At bar, meets burly guy other end of bar, chuckles. Reminds me of myself when I was younger. Invites himself over for a friendly drink. Fishes for name. LEYLONG.

JH checks: OLS okay. "Why does this keep happening to us?!" AKK makes K Digidevil stew, traditional, explns yr 1 of the KK calendar... JH pinches nose. "Is this safe for human consumption?"

GS getting drunk. Duels. "In my own way, I show respect for those who are gone." philosophical. LL leaves.

GS on cot. Morn: GS gets up. Breakfast. AKK "Man, that lady's got no tact." JH insists beat guy, even if it means fighting dirty.

Pirate leader. Still waiting for suitable job. Assassin arrives, IDs self as CHINGI, challenges GS to duel on Monkoku Hill. GS, in bad mood, goes to a bar and has chat with LEILONG. Aisha cooks traditional Ktaro fish stew. Plan to fight dirty. On Monkoku Hill, no trouble killing Chingi; Leilong reveals himself, tradename SHIMI. GS fires hip missiles, stop with hand shield. Fires caster bullet; shield. JH, Aisha and TS declare their support for GS, but Shimi defeats them easily; he refuses to fight Melfina. He challenges GS to a one-shot duel, and loses, apparently due to gun malf. Dying, warns him of the Unten Seven -- now six. JH, A, TS recover. Pirate leader upset at Shimi's failure, grows intrigued by GS. "I, Hasanko, want to meet you." On Hill, Shimi climbs out of grave, tosses aside bullet.

16 w-14-mar-2000 Demon of the Water Planet

Promo: A dangerous job will always come along no matter what line of work you're in...

Intro: It was the brain of ether physicist Dr.Sam Kaisenpo, the Chosung science company's technology group that was led by Dr.Hata Ikei, the donation of enormous amounts of capital made by every country, and above all, dragonite, that made the Munchausen Drive reality. In Year One of the Towards Stars calendar an unknown crystalline material, dragonite, was discovered in a meteorite that crashed in the Arushan desert of northern China. It was found to be a catalyst that released tremendous amounts of energy from the inexhaustible ether. In search of dragonite, humanity stampeded into space. It could be considered the gold rush of the space age. But dragonite was an extremely rare substance in the vastness of space. An alchemical method of synthesizing it artificially is being researched at this time, but has yet to be perfected. As a nonrenewable resource, dragonite is highly valued, and is considered to be the rarest, most valuable substance in the universe.

    17 Between Life and Machine

Promo: The secret of the _Outlaw_ is finally revealed, and McDoogal tries to get Melfina into his slimy clutches. Yeah, this feels like we're moving in on the climax of a great space drama, doesn't it? Not exactly. But what's real exciting is next week I'm gonna hafta pilot a giant robot! Huh, I'm not? Well let's hope the robot isn't piloting me. Next time on "Outlaw Star": Between Life and Machine. You'd better get ready!

Intro: The difference between humans and robots is obvious to anyone. There are clear differences between living and nonliving entities. But what about the differences between humans and cyborgs? This is not a problem either. A cyborg is someone who has superhuman abilities due to mechanical systems that have been incorporated into his body. But how do we begin to classify these bio-androids? Actually, this gives rise to ethical problems that become progressively complicated. If one were to classify a bio-android, it would have to be thought of as a lifeform. Because a cyborg is considered a person, a bio-android, in which machinery is combined with flesh, must also be classified as a person. However, most humans scoff at such ideas, and insist that these hybrid lifeforms can never be regarded as humans. Their justification is that we humans have souls that live on, but androids live only in the physical plane. And so, the classification of bio-android lifeforms remains unclear.

Throwing darts at photos of GS and M. Henry's new cyborg arm. Adjusts it to throw faster.

Video mail from Clyde and Iris the barmaid, owner of favorite place back on Sentinel 3. Picked up laptop in dump. A little over 3mo since left. M restocks fridge. Vidphone call from not-very-well-disguised McDoogal. Restaurant called Hellenism at Darien Point. Galactic leyline. Public phone on J Street. 40min to get there by car. Typical dinners start at 820-wong. M asks to go: she wants to know too.

Greek revival building. JH stands by in parking lot. Elegant clientele. Tuxedoed waiter. Pours wine for them. Proposes deal: sell ship and girl who acts as control computer. Hey, how do you know about? Heard about from little brother? GS realizes he's the "older McDoogal brother". Killing Hilda not personal. Discovered stray facts afterward. Kay pirates need special ship and navigation -- created with help from Space Forces, and stolen by Hilda. Request to destroy came from SF to hide their complicity; they didn't know what it did yet. Asks if they're the ones who destroyed a cargo ship near Sentinel six years ago. "I can't recall every little job I've done." GS pulls gun. 2 friends. TS and AKK. M leaps out window, 4 robodogs, launch missiles. AKK 20-W/h not enough for this; TS came because KP at bottom. Perk up at mention of GLL.

HM arrives at S&HE with roses for M. M slams door shut; he tells her not to be afraid.

JH shows up; comm tap jammed. GS pulls missile launcher; M also has SF top-of-the-line lightshield. JH hits one with bazooka; falls over. GS takes out two with caster shells.

Bangs on door. "It's for your own good, d'you hear me?" He punches through, unlocks door.

Fires caster, effective against Tao pirates because totally different technological system. Lightning rods burst away. Both fire, cancel out. GS fires gun for distraction. GS to JH, warn abotu OLS and M. M leaps into car hovering below cliff.

Hits her with roses, then apologizes. Both constructs. HM a human organism made from human protoplasm. "Nothing good can ever come from staying with normal people." Sobs. Knocks her out, carries her to OLS. She awakes, dashes aboard. HM tries to hack in. M gets into tube to help G3. Meet in cyberspace. Entreats her to leave with him. His arm freaks out. Gets call from M. Pulls off arm.

GS arrives. JH asks if she's okay.

Back at SH&E -- message for M, it's Guen Khan, talking about GLL. Has been looking into things. "We really have no other choice. We have to go to the galactic leyline at once, and end this."

Back at Silgrian shrine. "And who am I?"

18 The Strongest Woman in the Universe

Promo: With all my knowledge and experience with women, handing out advice about them is a specialty of mine. Fred, in your case, your lack of success is simply because your body isn't developed enough to interest any of these ladies. Just take a close look at their powerful bodies as they face each other in the ring; they're incredible. There's a battle going on between the sexes and you've got front-row seats. See it all next time on "Outlaw Star". Gene Starwind faces off with: The Strongest Woman in the Universe. You'd better get ready! --GS

Intro: Even in today's world where there are weapons of mass destruction that can wipe out an entire planet, fighters who believe only in brute force and selfless acts of courage have not gone completely out of style. In every age, survival of the fittest has been the rule, no matter how advanced the civilization might be. And so, the Universal Strong Man tournament was the first competition created to determine who was the indisputable strongest man and woman. The events cover every physical challenge imaginable. Despite strict rules to protect the lives of these courageous combatants, the fights are grueling and savage to the extreme. No one has ever in the history of the tournament won ten championships in a row. However, the appearance of one tough competitor has changed the course of history for the tournament foreever. Speed, stamina, technique, tactics; and now this invincible competitor, excelling in all of these areas, has won an unprecedented four tournaments in a row. She is called the ultimate, the strongest woman in the universe.

GS goes to Fred Lowe for more money. He's willing -- on one condition. "I'm not gonna dance with ya!" GS protests. When FL starts describing the annual Galactic Strongman Tournament (at the Heiphon Colliseum, 100,000-wong to the winner), GS says he won't compete, either. FL passes across two photos of a competitor in the female division. Cute face -- then GS looks at the full-body shot. Eek, muscles! The job: keep this woman, REIKO ANDO, from winning a fifth year in a row.

At a bar, FL blabs the rest of the story. It's Lowe family tradition that brides must be the strongest women available, usually interpreted to refer to mental acuity and a high moral ethic. RA is in love with FL, and he foolishly agreed if she'd win five tournaments in a row -- but he's not ready!

In a car, the OLS five plan to enter AKK in the female division. At the colliseum, they learn Ktaro-Ktaro aren't permitted; the official excitedly crawls across his desk to explain. Five years before, a Ktaro become overexcited, transformed, pounced on her opponent and bit off her right ear. She was immediately disqualified, but couldn't be controlled; 984 spectators were hospitalized and 5379 seriously wounded.

TS refuses to do a job for FL (she *was* sent to assassinate him in #6). M suggests GS enter the tournament himself. He protests that he's not qualified, and moreover isn't female. But... and TS gets an evil gleam in her eye.

The next day, FL watches from a skybox at the 32 assembled female competitors -- including "Jenny" Starwind, with blonde ponytails and a pink skirted jumpsuit. "I can't believe it! Gene Starwind got dressed up in that embarrassing outfit just for me!" Entering the locker room, they discuss having bribed an official -- and look, it's AKK! The confront her, and she claims she's the mysterious MASKED FIGHTER FIRECAT, clad in a shiny red suit that conceals her ears and claws. A bound girl falls out of a locker, and insists *she's* the real Firecat; AKK tosses her back in. Sure it's dishonest, but at least "Jenny" doesn't have to fight now. (So they think!)

On the colliseum floor, the goggle- and gloves-wearing LADY IRIGA (one of the Unten Seven) is ready to fight, though her two aides protest that she's diverted from Lord Hazanko's mission.

It's Jenny in the red corner vs. RA in the blue. To herself, RA dedicates her performance to FL. (In his skybox, FL shudders. "Uhrr. I feel like someone just walked over my grave.") JS evades RA for several seconds (ringside, TS approves of the strategem), then they start wrestling.

GS awakes in the infirmary, attended by M, JH, TS and FL. "How could you humiliate me?" Fred asks, aghast at the loss to RA. "What do you propose, I propose?" They pull their trump card: AKK. From the skybox, they watch her win her second round. In the locker room, FL begs her not to lose. They get the news -- RA is out; she 19 seconds in the semifinals against "Iraga of the Hokay Shadowboxing Team". On this basis, FL wiggles out of the promised payment to GS.

In the corridor, the injured RA sees FL, and begs for another chance. She'll win another five tournaments in a row, she promises. She hugs him, and he passes out. "I'll make myself worthy to be your wife!"

Next match: Firecat in red vs. Iriga in blue. Iriga notices GS behind Firecat, and wonders why he's here. They're evenly matched, but then Iriga pins AKK to the mat. "Normally this is where I'd let you off the hook, but not if you're one of Gene Starwind's frineds. You're not going to leave this ring alive..." Her elbow descends towards AKK's neck -- who catches her in a scissors leg grab. Unbelievingly, she slowly pulls AKK off, and tosses her away -- but AKK takes a glove with her, revealing a claw. JH is astounded: Iriga's another Ktaro!

The crowd panics and runs. Iriga pulls off her goggles, and transforms to a wolf-creature with two tails. She can't finish the match, so she'll finish GS instead. Her agents are Kay robots. AKK doesn't care if she's pirate *or* wolf, and transforms too. A spotlight falls from the ceiling and starts a fire. TS urges them to leave the building, but AKK? "In her present she-wolf state it will be impossible to get through to her."

Outside, they watch the colliseum burn. M looks up to the roof, where AKK has defeated Oraga, white beast standing over the brown one. "Maybe I should stop teasing her for a while," Gene says. "She really proved herself to be a champion this time."

Later at S&HE, they discuss Iriga, and AKK corrects them: the Ktaro don't hang out with "lowlife wolves". TS has heard of a Kay Pirates werewolf. SH bemoans their unchanged financial situation. FL calls from the hospital (left hand bandaged, in the bed alongside RA) and comes through with the loan. They're off to the galactic leyline!

    19 Law and Lawlessness

Promo: We've been captured by a renegade frontier security agency. Now they're subjecting Jim and I to the ultimate humiliation by putting us on the night watch for our archenemy, the pirates. It's really hard to take orders from someone who's always barking at you, y'know? You gotta relax, Gene, relax. Oops, sorry, I guess I nodded off for a second. Anyway, next time, join us on Outlaw Star as we explore: Law and Lawlessness. You'd better get ready! --GS

Intro: In contrast to the national space forces, there exist the private security forces. Over centuries humanity's territory expanded rapidly, and as various interstellar states and countries were formed, the space forces were founded to provide equal protection for all. However, in the vastness of space, not all colonies had access to its full protection and resources. This gave rise to the private security forces, run by private enterprises. The security forces are comprised of security companies and top transportation businessmen. They protect developing planets and interplanetary trading companies from pirate and various kinds of random trouble. However, the enormous contractual and upkeep expenses are a source of trouble for low-income territories on the open frontier.

20 Cats and Girls and Spaceships

Promo: Hey, Jim Hawking here. I've always had to be the reliable one, because Gene can be a little flaky sometimes. But something tells me that love is finally headed my way too. What are people living for anyway? To get all lovey-dovey with someone, what else? Then they pledge eternal love for each other (while it lasts) and then they have a major falling out, and the wife goes home to her folks. Waitaminit, that doesn't sound right. Next time, found out for yourself on Outlaw Star. Cats and Girls and Spaceships; you'd better get ready! --JH

Intro: "Subject: Jim Hawking, Jim to his friends. Age: 11, height: 140 cm, weight: 32 kg, blood type: A. A boy genius, he is the son of a renowned hacker known as the Computer Wizard. The cautious type, Jim is Gene Starwind's polar opposite. Jim always carries a computer with him, and diligently keeps a close eye on profitable information and enemy movement. He is a quick thinker, yet he is very outgoing in his actions. Jim displays many precocious traits which are anything but childlike. Although occasionally victimized and tormented by Gene's inability to plan ahead, Jim has not abandoned him, and judging by the way he manages Gene, Jim clearly looks up to him."

    "Well, that's understandable." --GS

"Anyway, I'm totally the kind of guy needed around here to stop Gene's bachelor lifestyle from crashing down around his ears." --JH

"Hey! Stop making things up." --GS

"Well, that's my cue to leave." --JH

"I would also like to ask that you not disturb my job." --OLS

    "Right!" --JH

Gilliam-3 reports uncommonly safe flight conditions; ETA to Transfer Station Simka Five is 30 minutes. AKK is bored. "It could just be a simple matter of one coincidence after another," JH mutters to himself, "but this is a weird crew we've collected." AKK's ears prick and she haughtily retorts "you shouldn't be insulting a woman who's mature and worldly." From her tank, M notes that JH and AKK get along so well. TS sips tea. G3 reports a ship in vicinity, closing rapidly, not responding to hails; he utters excuses for not detecting it sooner. They go to grappler combat mode as a precaution.

"You're Gene Starwind of the Outlaw Star?" the other pilot asks. "Nothing personal, but I'm here to destroy you." His ship unfolds its two grappler arms, which then separate as two individual arm-ships. Gene can't keep up with attacks from three directions.

    21 Grave of the Dragon

Promo: In our next episode, the secret of the galactic leyline is gonna be revealed among the ancient ruins of a mysterious planet. Not I'm not trying to be cocky or anything, but story development has to follow a certain order, y'know. I just can't blurt the whole plot out to you. What? You want to find out now? Alright, believe it or not, the leyline is really-- well, to tell you the truth, I don't know what the secret is either. Next time on Outlaw Star: grave of the dragon. You'd better get ready!

    22 Gravity Jailbreak

Promo: All I have on my criminal record are some worthless fines that I paid off in jail, but these guys who are here in this gravity prison are no joke. They're strong, fast, have a nasty look in their eyes, and the stupid warden's a maniac. As I infiltrate the prison in search of the leyline's coordinates, my life is being put in danger. Huh? Waitaminit! Nobody said anything about that. Next time on Outlaw Star: gravity jailbreak. You'd better get ready!

    24 Cutting the Galactic Leyline

Promo: Now that we're dialed into the whereabouts of the galactic leyline, we gotta go there, right? But it seems we're not the only ones with that idea: the pirates, and the McDoogals. Looks like we'll have a three-way struggle. To tell you the truth, this is bad. Whenever I pilot the _Outlaw Star_, I've gotta leave _Outlaw Star's_ fate in God's hands. Next time on Outlaw Star: cutting the galactic leyline. A warning: better prepare yourself for this one.

    25 Maze of Despair

    Intro:

    I don't know what words I can say;
the wind has a way -- to talk to me
    Flowers sleep a silent lullaby
    I pray for reply -- I'm ready.

Quiet -- day -- calms me
oh serenity; someone please tell me
oh ?moon? what is it they say
maybe I will know one day.

    I don't know what words I can say;
the wind has a way -- to talk to me
    Flowers sleep a silent lullaby
    I pray for reply -- I'm ready.

GS asks TS why she came, and she answers: "Why is it that men always want to know the why of everthing? It's not as though knowing why will let you do anything about it." She lets him leap the chasm, since the ledge might be unstable. It is. Hitoriga shows up. GS aims gun from across chasm. Find people interesting, but mostly because she has a longstanding feud with the Kay Pirates -- particularly Hitoriga. She urges him to go, reminds him of Melfina. They face off. "Just because I destroyed your entire family is no reason to hate me so." He chants, releases a burst of energy shattering his cloak -- and when the smoke clears, there's a duplicate of TS there. "At the very least we'll discover who this beautiful face belongs to."

Running, GS encounters XX. Chants, waves her fan, and the pavement shatters. #11 doesn't work, or #10. She laughs. He fires off a shell that's a small black sphere -- it consumes her, then lightning sucks at GS's life.

Elsewhere in the labyrinth, JH and AKK encounter XX, the straightjacketed Unten. She sends JH away, gets philosophical. He changes to whirlwind.

Harry finds Melfina. Then Hazanko hovers down.

    26 Return to Space

Promo: I traveled the universe. I met a lot of interesting people and experienced a lot of things that you can only imagine. Maybe this isn't the time to brag, but why not? Now before you can talk big, you gotta put your money where your mouth is. Whaddya say, time for one last big push. I'll show you how I live my life, hmm? Yeah, I guess that sounds like I'm talking big again. Next time on Outlaw Star: return to space. You'd better get ready!

    Intro: None

"I am Hazanko. Your casters will not work against me."

"And I am Gene Starwind, an outlaw not in the habit of listening to warnings."

M feels betrayed. GS fires his last shell.

  • 24 hours have passed. Ships waiting. HM backup in Shangri-La mainframe. Recovered RM, put him in tank.

Four as shapes. Tao and Caster canceled. "...and we've all ceased functioning. ... The will of the Leyline is keeping us alive in another location." Explains. Library left by an extinct race. "I am data, and data's me. Goodbye." "That guy makes absolutely no sense." Can use Leyline to grant any desire. "All I really want is for you to return with me. I made you cry again. What do you want, Melfina?" Gasps; realizes Hazanko is ready to leave with all the power he desire. Must stop; universe in danger. Can combine their powers to stop him.

Hazanko returns to Geomancer as wraith. Melfina zaps into her tank, Gene into his seat. Still linked to the GLL. Hazanko transforms his ship. Spits flame, burns off paint. Fight on both real and data levels. H extrudes tentacles and grabs G; M reminds him they're together. M arrives, other s briefly.. OLS transforms, is now as big as Geomancer. Impales with nose. It grabs OLS -- which evaporates and reforms. Kill the GM. Boom! M meets M, and is told GLL will move to a new location. "I'm the you that's the maiden of the leyline. You don't need me anymore, do you?" The black sphere fades away and OLS exits (no sign of the fleet).

GS complains: broke down. Keep cutting corners on maint, JH explains. Repair ship. Finds TS and AKK on bridge. "I've already been to some of these places, but they may be more interesting with you along."

Outro: Gene Starwind, native of planet Earth, outlaw, age 20. His partner is Jim Hawking, age 11, computer engineer. Additionally it has been confirmed that his navigator is Melfina. Rumor has it that he is accompanied by an assassin who goes by the name Suzuka, and a Ktaro-Ktaro named Aysha; but until we have more information, this remains unconfirmed. His ship is called the _Outlaw Star_. For a new outlaw yet to earn a name for himself, his reputation precedes him. However, the nickname he earns for himself will depend upon the effects of his further actions.
